Paladin's Quest is strange. It's got strange world, strange characters, strange gameplay. The game takes place on Lennus, one of the moons of planet Raiga. Having this alien setting means everything is going to look otherworldy. There's even a lot of different races which are completely original and not your default orcs and elves!

You play as Chezni - a boy who studies in a magic school. One day you're challenged by your friends to climb up a tower in your town, and you accept the challenge (you can't really decline, but thou must!). On top of the tower you find a huge machine and activate it. Doing so awakens a giant dragon Dal Gren who destroys your town and now threatens whole Lennus. Now Chezni departs on a journey to defeat Dal Gren and, eventually, finds himself in a conflict with dictator Zaygos who plans to use Dal Gren for his needs.

On you journey you meet a girl Midia who is your only 'normal' party member. Any other ones are mercenaries whom you can recruit in different towns. All mercs come "as is", that means you cannot change their gear, they can't learn new spells and they can't even level up. Battles here are interesting. You make choices with d-pad and that is quite comfortable. Spells here doesn't use mp, in fact you don't have mp at all, you use your hp for casting and you can restore hp by using bottles which can be refilled in town. Also there's no 'items' in usual sense. Almost every item you equip can be used in battle for something. Some items buffs you or debuffs enemies while others are just for damage.

Paladin's Quest is a good game overall, though it is also a bit clunky and slow. The poor English translation and plain graphics make it feel somewhat outdated. The battle music, however, is awesome - some of the best I’ve heard on the SNES.
