I heard A LOT of hate for this game and after playing it for myself... it's fine. It's definitely not a masterpiece but I don't think it deserves all hate. Secret of the Stars is an average DQ clone, there was tons of them back then.
There's one thing worth mentioning though. In this game you have two parties which you can swap at any point but second party is quite weak and useless but there's some dungeons only this second party can enter. Other than that it's a typcal dq clone: you're moving from town to town, completing dungeons, beating enemies in turn based combat and saving the world.
Would I recommend this game? Nah, there's much better games on SNES alone to spend your time with. But if you have nothing better to play (debatable) go ahead.
