How do people usually start talking about FF2? Oh yeah, "Final Fantasy 2 is a 'black sheep' of the series and all of that, ending with saying that this game isn't good or not the best ff". Personally I really like this game. Story here is about evil empire wanting to conquer all world and heroes are a rebel group opposing it. This story will became a stable in later ff games even referencing "Wild Rose". FF2 was also first game to introduce chocobos, Cid, Ultima magic and dragoons all of which appears in every ff game after this one. Also comparing to other rpgs of it's time ff2 was the first to have a polished dramatic story with twists and actual characters with their personalities and traits.
While battle system isn't much different from first game, leveling is very different, it's actually IS the reason this game receives hate. Simply speaking: you're leveling what you use. Use swords - do more hits with sword, use magic spell - it's power increases as well as mp. In original famicom version the biggest problem was hp, to increase it you have to lose it which lead into situation where you have to hit your characters yourself to raise their hp but that's not a problem in remakes tho, because Square Enix added compensatory hp. That means all of your character's hp will increase after few battles. Or you can use "swap trick". Teach your characters Swap spell and use it on weak monsters - you'll swap your hp and mp with them and both will increase after battle. This leveling system will also became a base for leveling in Romancing Saga.
During this playthrough I used Firion and Guy as attackers with Guy learning few healing spells in case of emergency while Maria was mostly using magic. She was also equipped with knife instead of bow because of evade % it provides while also having low magic interference. Leon joins way too late so I just gave him Blood Sword in one hand, spear in other and he did fine.
I really liked Pixel Remaster but I would still prefer PSP remake for it's additional content; also in PR encounter rate is way to high, yes you can turn it off but I don't like using something that makes game easier. FF2 is a good game despite what everyone says, I highly recommend to play it.
